Two people died and 20 others were hospitalized for the outbreak of a respiratory virus in a large community of retired elders, Virginia officials said.
Fifty-five of the 263 residents of the Greenspring Retreat Community in Springfield, Virginia, fell ill during the epidemic, the Fairfax County Health Department said. In the last two weeks, sick residents had coughs, fever and pneumonia.
Health department officials said they quarantined the sections of the building where the infection is believed to be. Greenspring does not accept new residents while the epidemic is being investigated.
The two patients who died were hospitalized with pneumonia but were "elderly individuals with complex medical problems," said Benjamin Schwartz, a spokeswoman for the health department.
