When PlayStation 5 comes out this November, roughly 99% of the over 4,000 PS4 games will be playable on PS5. We know you have questions about how PS4 games work on PS5, so here are some answers to the most common questions among the PlayStation community.
Which generation of games will be compatible with the PS5’s backward compatibility feature?
We have focused on the huge catalog of PlayStation 4 games and we are pleased to state that approximately 99% of PS4 titles will be playable on PS5 from launch day. This includes games that have defined the PS4 generation, from acclaimed PlayStation exclusives like The Last of Us Part II or Ghost of Tsushima to huge hits from our third-party partners.
What is the difference between playing PS4 games on a PS5 digital edition console or a PS5 console with an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc drive?
The gaming experience on both models will be identical. However, the way to access game content is different:
PS5 digital edition
- You will be able to play the digital versions of your compatible PS4 games on the PS5 digital edition console. This includes compatible PS4 digital games that you have already purchased or intend to purchase through the PlayStation Store on PS4, PS5, a web browser, or the PlayStation mobile app.
- Since the console does not incorporate a disc drive, you will not be able to play your physical version PS4 games on the digital edition PS5.
PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc drive
- You will be able to play the digital version of your compatible PS4 games that you have downloaded through the PlayStation Store on PS4, PS5, a web browser, or the PlayStation mobile app.
- You can also use your PS4 game discs.
When you log into PS5 with your account for PlayStation Network, you will automatically see your library of PS4 content played in the menu.
Make sure to keep your PS5 console updated to the latest version of your system software and apply all available patches to your games.
How is the PS4 gaming experience on PS5?
PS4 titles get even better on PS5. Certain PS4 games will benefit from reduced loading times on the PS5 console, as well as taking advantage of Game Boost to deliver improved or more stable frame rates. Other titles with unlocked frame rates or dynamic resolution up to 4K will be viewed with higher fidelity. Also, PS4 games will be able to take advantage of some of the features of the new PS5 user experience, but we will talk about this later.
Are PlayStation VR games backward compatible?
Yes, PlayStation VR games are included in the list of the thousands of PS4 games playable on PS5. Please note that to play PS VR games on a PS5 console, you will need the PS VR headset, a DualShock 4 wireless controller or a PlayStation Move motion controller and a PS Camera (for PS4), which are sold separately from the PS5 console. Also, the HD camera of PS5 is not compatible with PS VR on PS5. You will need to use the PS Camera (for PS4) with the PS Camera adapter (no purchase required), to use PS VR on PS5.
What about PS4 games from PS Now and PS Plus?
All backward compatible PS4 games included in PS Plus or PS Now will work on PS5.
Can I stream PS4 games on PS5?
Yes, PS5 supports Remote Play for PS4 games and PS Now game streaming. The advantage of streaming is that you save storage space on the PS5. Please note that streamed PS4 games will not be able to take advantage of PS5’s Game Boost technology.
How do PS4 game and save game transfers work between consoles?
You can transfer digital games, game data, and saved games from a PS4 console to a PS5 console using a LAN cable or over a Wi-Fi network. If you already have PS4 games and game data stored on a USB storage drive connected to your PS4, you can use that same drive as external storage for PS5. In addition, if you are a PS Plus member, you can also sync your game saves with the PS5 through cloud storage.
Please note that whether or not there is the ability to transfer game saves between the PS4 and PS5 versions of a game is up to the developer and may vary by title for games for both generations.
In the case of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, when upgrading from PS4 to PS5, saved games carry over. Sackboy Big Adventure will also support PS4 to PS5 save data transfer via an update that will be available shortly after the game’s launch. We will share more information on both games closer to launch.
How can I tell which PS4 games are not playable?
Games that are only playable on PS4 will include a ‘PS4 Only’ note on PlayStation Store. The same goes for downloadable PS4 games from PS Now that are not playable on PS5. You can see a list of games that are only playable on PS4, as well as detailed information on backward compatibility here: playstation.com/ps5-backwards-compatibility
* For PS4 game discs, to update the title to the PlayStation 5 version and transfer game saves, the PlayStation 5 model with Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc drive is required.
