Mexico.- The head of the Ministry of Public Education (SEP), Esteban Moctezuma Barragán, assured that all precautions will be taken for the back to school and they will obey the instructions of the health authorities to take care of the health of students and students.
The Federal Government presented this Wednesday a staggered plan to return to a “new normal” starting next May 18 in different regions of the country, which will be guided by a traffic light with four colors (red, orange, yellow and green) that They will indicate the precautionary measures to be taken municipality by municipality, according to the number of infections and the trend of infections.
In this sense, Moctezuma Barragán declared:
“We will not return to classes until it is safe for our girls and boys and the school community; This will be indicated by the health authority. We will only open with a green light ”
According to the explanation given minutes before, the traffic light takes into account five activities: public health and work measures; labor (divided into essential and non-essential); in the open and closed public space; care of vulnerable people; and schoolchildren.
In the area of school activities, they will only be carried out when the traffic light is green, while those in public spaces and among vulnerable people may be carried out in orange and yellow with some restrictions.

Stephen Moctezuma He added that in areas of the country where it is still not safe to return to classes, the distance learning program Aprende en Casa will continue to be applied, which “is followed by 8 out of 10 teachers and 9 out of 10 students in the country.”
In addition, he pointed out that they will review when is the best time for each region to return to the classrooms and to close the 19-20 school year with a face-to-face assessment stage for students, which will be followed by planning for the next cycle, which It has no start date yet.
“Let’s not lower the guard. The health of our adolescent boys and girls is the most important thing. His education is assured and for this reason we are working with all our effort and dedication. ”
Governors oppose going back to school
Despite the Federal Government’s announcement to return to the “new normal”, at least six governors have disagreed with the restart of classes due to the possibility that this will trigger the Covid-19 infections in their states.
Such is the case of Puebla, where Governor Miguel Barbosa Huerta said that there are no conditions for returning to classrooms in any state in the country, as there has been no significant reduction in new cases, and warned:
“Back to school will be until the topic of avoiding infections is perfectly clear. It will not be on June 1 when you can return to normality. “
For his part, Enrique Alfaro assured that he made the decision together with his cabinet that the school year will close virtually to safeguard the health of the students.
After highlighting that it would be “a serious mistake” to return to school, he announced that he will defend his position before the federation.
In Michoacán, Silvano Aureoles considered it “unnecessary” to resume educational activities and stressed that they will analyze the steps to follow before announcing the return to school.
In Tamaulipas, Baja California Sur and Coahuila, local governments have taken similar positions and demanded guarantees from the federation before preparing for the return of students to schools.
