Phototherapy is a treatment suggested by dermatologists for certain skin conditions. The idea of this technique: artificially reproduce the solar radiation which has effects on some of these pathologies. Explanations.
According Dermatology Clinic D in Laval, Canadaphototherapy means “a treatment of certain skin diseases by light”. Many skin conditions improve or even disappear once the sun or summer returns. This is the process that phototherapy (light therapy) tries to reproduce. This method uses special lamps that emit ultraviolet rays (UV rays). Their emission is in focused or narrow bands, which ensures that the rays have the desired length, thus avoiding any additional irradiation.
The ray emitted during phototherapy has an anti-inflammatory effect on the skin and is therefore very beneficial for many skin diseases. In addition, light exposure is usually quite short and takes place under the supervision of a medical professional, in a safe environment. According Professor Jean-Claude Béanidermatologist at Grenoble University Hospital: “In France, the two most used phototherapies are PUVA and narrow-spectrum UVB phototherapy, while the UVA1 phototherapy developed in Germany is little used. The type of phototherapy is chosen by your doctor according to your condition and depending on your skin.”
Phototherapy: for which diseases?
According l’association Psoriasis France, phototherapy is particularly effective against the disease. It can be used in extended forms or when psoriasis involvement is limited to the hands and/or feet. Two types are used in these treatments: puvatherapy and UVB phototherapy. The first technique consists of exposing the person to UVA rays in the cabin. The second, for its part, uses ultraviolet rays similar to those of the sun.
