While Tom Van Grieken (Vlaams Belang) and Thierry Baudet (Forum for Democracy) are euphoric about the Italian elections, most European politicians are concerned. But according to N-VA Member of the European Parliament Assita Kanko, we should not worry about the elections in another country. “Meloni is a strong, energetic woman who won the election in an impressive way. It is up to Europe to pick up on this signal.”

Italians first!in other words first the Italians,” tweeted Vlaams Belang chairman Tom Van Grieken in response to the Italian election results. “Italians are once again taking over in their own country. Congratulations to the right bloc from Matteo Salvini and Giorgia Meloni.” Thierry Baudet, chairman of the far right Dutch Forum for Democracy, even had a heart for Meloni’s victory.

Most European politicians are concerned about the election results in Italy. For example, Member of the European Parliament for Open VLD Hilde Vautmans is concerned about “democracy and the hostility towards migrants and the LGBTIQ community. This is not where Italy or Europe should go.”

But according to colleague Assita Kanko, who sits in the European Parliament for N-VA, we don’t have to worry about the Italian election results. “The Italians have spoken. Who are we to be concerned or euphoric about that? The Italian voter gave a clear signal. It is up to Europe to take this into account now.”

Beter and Berlusconi

According to Kanko, that Italian signal is a stricter migration policy. “Those Italians want a clear and strict migration policy, because they are concerned about security, integration and identity.”

Would Kanko have found the Italian result equally sovereign had Salvini become the great victor, moving even more right on the political spectrum than the far right Meloni? “Then we have to speak again if Salvini were to win. Now Meloni is the winner. And she is certainly better than Berlusconi. She is a strong, energetic woman who won the election in an impressive way. Point.”
