Wife of the Dutch ambassador Lebanon died in Beirut explosion

The 55-year-old woman was seriously injured in the explosion and has been hospitalized in critical condition ever since. The woman worked for the personnel department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and worked alternately from The Hague and Beirut, where her husband is the Dutch ambassador.

‘Hit by bad luck’

Hedwig and her husband Jan Waltmans had been together for 38 years and worked at various locations abroad, the ministry reports. The couple had just returned from vacation last week. Hedwig was in the living room with her husband when she was hit by the explosion ‘by bad luck’, the ministry said.

Ministers Stef Blok and Sigrid Kaag have their condolences to the family for this heavy loss. “We are deeply saddened by the far too early death of our colleague Hedwig Waltmans-Molier in the heavy explosion in Beirut. Our thoughts go out to her husband, their children and their family.”

Five other Dutch people were slightly injured by the explosion. Four of them were affiliated with the Dutch embassy.
