“Latvia and Brazil have a similar understanding of the international order,” emphasized Z. Kalniņa-Lukaševica, member of the Speaker of the Saeima, on Wednesday, March 22, during a meeting in parliament with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Brazil to the Republic of Latvia Marija Luīza Escorela de Morais (Maria Luisa Escorel de Moraes). The ambassador had come to the parliament on a farewell visit.
Z. Kalniņa-Lukaševica urged to respect the historical representation of the Latvian diaspora in Brazil in order to promote mutual cooperation in the fields of culture, education and economy. Historically, Brazil has the largest Latvian diaspora in Latin America – it is estimated that there are up to 25,000 Latvian descendants in Brazil.
The parties discussed the current bilateral cooperation between Latvia and Brazil and its prospects. Z. Kalniņa-Lukaševica emphasized Latvia’s interest in strengthening economic ties, especially in the fields of new and smart technologies, innovation and research, higher education, bioeconomy and pharmaceuticals.
The member of the Speaker of the Saeima and the ambassador agreed on the positive impact of the summit of the European Union and the Latin American and Caribbean countries (CELAC) planned for July this year for the expansion of regional cooperation.
The parties also discussed the consequences of Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine and its impact on the security situation in the region, emphasizing the need for the international community to defend a rule-based order.
Z. Kalniņa-Lukaševica thanked the ambassador for her work and expressed her hope for a successful dialogue between Latvia and Brazil in the future as well.
