The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, announced this Monday on his Telegram account the arrival in Ukraine of Abrams tanks promised earlier this year by the United States to kyiv.
“Good news from Minister (Defense, Rustem) Umérov. The Abrams are already in Ukraine and are preparing to reinforce our brigades“Zelensky wrote. “I thank our allies for fulfilling the agreements!” he added.
The president of the United States, Joe Biden, committed in January of this year to send 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. Before sending this material, the United States removed certain technologies from these armored vehicles to prevent them from falling into Russian hands.
During his meeting with Zelensky in Washington last Thursday, Biden announced that the first Abrams would arrive in Ukraine this week.
Abrams tanks are equipped with 120mm depleted uranium ammunition. These munitions can pierce armor but are also controversial due to the toxic risks for the military and its population.
