The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyis found in Sweden to hold talks with government leaders and political parties, and with the Swedish royal family. There he was surprised by a Russian bombardment in the city of Chernigov that has left at least seven dead and 90 injured.
The Ukrainian president specified that he will meet with the Swedish prime minister, Ulf Kristersson, and with members of the royal family, and revealed that he will hold talks focused on “association, defense cooperation, integration into the EU (European Union) and common Euro-Atlantic security.” “I thank all the Swedes who support Ukraine,” she added.
This visit comes almost a year and a half after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and at a time when Sweden is about to join NATOlike its neighbor Finland.
Shortly after the start of the invasion in February 2022, Sweden abandoned its doctrine of not supplying countries at war with weapons, and provided kyiv with thousands of anti-tank weapons. In July, Turkey ended its opposition to Sweden’s joining the Atlantic Alliance, giving the green light to Stockholm’s membership aspirations.
From Sweden, Zelensky lamented a Russian bombardment that left “several dead” and “injured” in the center of Chernigov, in the north of Ukraine, and also reached a university and a theater. “A Russian missile hit right in the center of the city, in our Chernihiv,” Zelensky wrote. “A square, the polytechnic university and a theater. An ordinary Saturday that Russia turned into a day of pain and loss. There are dead, there are injured,” she added.
