Zelenskyy unexpectedly addressed the UN Security Council: Russia violates international law

According to him, Zelenskyy mentioned five main pieces of evidence of Russia’s violation of international law. These include ignoring International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reports on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and “nuclear blackmail,” Zelenskyy said, referring to recent statements by Russian officials that Moscow is ready to use all available weapons.

“A week ago, I presented a plan to achieve peace, with Moscow responding with mobilization, which is also focused on remote areas or Crimea,” the president said. According to him, the fourth evidence is the “so-called referendums” on the annexation of controlled territories to Russia. “People have to fill out papers with guns to their heads,” he said of the internationally unrecognized vote that ended on Tuesday in Russian-controlled parts of Ukraine.

The war in Ukraine

The last and most visible evidence is the effort to join the occupied territories to Russia and to mobilize the residents there, whom Moscow wants to send to fight against their homeland, Ukraine, Zelenskyy added.

Immediately before Zelenskyi’s speech, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs reiterated at a Security Council meeting that the UN supports the “territorial integrity of Ukraine” within its “recognized borders”, AFP reported.
