On January 16, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park launched an audio-visual update of the “Xiangxi Corpse Hunting”, and the related video quickly spread on social media.
In the video, more than a dozen actors and actresses lined up in two rows, wearing black zombie costumes from “Xiangxi Corpse Exorcism”, with charms stuck on the front of their hats and red scarves wrapped around their necks. With the gestures of “corpse chasers” waving, the actors twisted and jumped to the music. The movements of stretching his arms and jumping with his legs are exactly the same as those of “zombie” in movies and TV series.
There is a person in front of the team ringing a bell to “drive away the corpse”, and there is another person in the team wearing a big red robe.
The video sparked criticism from Chinese netizens. Some netizens criticized it as “creepy” and said, “Who would dare to go (travel)?” Some people mocked it as “bewitched.” Others angrily criticized “ruining traditional culture.”
Amid public condemnation, the relevant video was quickly removed from the shelves.
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park said in the video’s copy: “The director you want is coming to SHI! Whoever finds Director Peng Zhenhua first, you can choose the charming handsome guy from western Hunan.”
According to public information, Peng Zhenhua is the director of the Culture, Tourism, Radio, Television and Sports Bureau of Wulingyuan District, Zhangjiajie City.
After the video was taken off the shelves, a staff member of the Park Management Bureau responded that the previous copy did mention Director Peng, but Director Peng did not appear in the subsequent filming. Peng Zhenhua himself also denied participating in the film.
According to previous media reports, in the cold weather on January 15, Peng Zhenhua and actors from Zhangjiajie’s “Charming Xiangxi” were dressed in straw and performed the Tujia dance “Maogusi”. Peng Zhenhua served as the lead dancer and danced the popular “Subject Three” to attract tourists.
Prior to this, the Jiangxi and Henan cultural tourism bureaus used a “beautiful man trick” to attract female tourists by sending out shirtless and fit men. This also attracted public attention and was ridiculed for “seducing the whole country.”
Among them, Jiangxi Culture and Tourism asked tall and powerful men to wear Jinyiwei uniforms, showing off their upper body muscle lines, and also used the slogan “‘Princess’, don’t hesitate! Come to Jiangxi!” Yuntai Mountain Scenic Area in Jiaozuo, Henan and Xinxiang Baligou Scenic Area invited a man with “eight-pack abs” to shoot a promotional video in the snowy scenery. At the Luoyang Longmen High-Speed Railway Station, several warriors wearing golden armor “picked up” the passengers and shouted to tourists, “The capital of Luoyang welcomes Her Royal Highness the Princess back to the city.”
