This is how the World Measures Natural Disaster Risk

The WorldRiskReport (WRR) report prepared by Bündnis Entwicklung Hilft together with the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV) assessed 193 UN member states based on five main components, namely exposure, vulnerability, social vulnerability, ability to face, and adaptability.

These five aspects help determine how likely a contry is to experience a natural disaster and how prepared the country is to deal with it.

According to the report, Asia and America are still the regions with the highest disaster risk. Meanwhile Africa is said to be the most vulnerable continent, with more than 80% of its territory classified as “high risk” or “very high”.

In contrast, countries in Europe and the Persian Gulf are among the safest. This cannot be separated from the stable geographical location, infrastructure advancement, and a strong mitigation system.

“Disaster risk is not only determined by natural forces, but also by human readiness to handle them,” wrote the WorldRiskIndex 2025 report quoted from DevelopmentAid.
