Historic New Richmond Home Destroyed by Fire

A significant piece of New Richmond, Ohio’s history was lost this weekend when a fire engulfed the Joseph Clasgens House, a historic home located on Susanna Way. The structure, which dates back over 150 years, was severely damaged, leaving the community mourning the loss of a local landmark.

Fire and Response

The New Richmond Fire & EMS Department responded to a fire at 314 Susanna Way just after midnight on Sunday, February 15, 2026. Upon arrival, crews found the building fully involved in flames. The New Richmond Fire Department was assisted by crews from across Clermont County in battling the blaze. WLWT reports that at least seven departments responded to the call.

A Landmark’s History

Known as the “Joseph Clasgens House” by Historic New Richmond Inc., the home sits on the banks of the Ohio River and is a featured stop on the organization’s historic walking tour. Greg Roberts, president of Historic New Richmond Inc., described the home as “Italian in its structure” and part of what was once known as “millionaire’s row” along the riverfront. According to WCPO, the Clasgens family owned the home in the 1860s.

Community Reaction

The loss of the historic home has deeply affected the New Richmond community. Longtime resident Gerandum Younts Jr. Expressed the sentiment of many, stating, “It’s destroyed, it’s a piece of history that’s gone.” WCPO reports that the building had been rebuilt after previous damage, even serving as a haunted house and a bed and breakfast at different times.

Investigation Underway

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire. WLWT reports that officers on the scene indicated the home was vacant, but the owner may have been present at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported as a result of the blaze.

Video footage of the damage is available on the WCPO Facebook page.
