Katelyn Sphuler: Glacier High Wrestler Dominates on and Off the Mat

Katelyn Sphuler, a senior at Glacier High School in Kalispell, Montana, is making a significant impact in the world of girls wrestling while maintaining a stellar academic record and dedicating herself to community service. Her success comes as girls wrestling gains increasing recognition and participation in the state.

From Family Roots to Individual Success

Sphuler’s journey to wrestling wasn’t immediate. While her father, Calvin Sphuler, wrestled in high school and coached her younger brother Jonah in the Glacier Wrestling Club, Katelyn discovered her passion for the sport after eighth grade. Montana High School Association sanctioned girls wrestling in 2021-22, opening the door for her to explore the sport. “Then I got to high school and it was an option,” Katelyn Sphuler said. “And I thought it was interesting. I joined, and now here I am.”

Impressive Season Record and Academic Achievements

Currently, Sphuler boasts a record of 32-7 with 24 pins this season, competing in the 100-pound weight class. She is also a four-time state champion in flag football, demonstrating her athletic versatility. Beyond athletics, Sphuler excels academically, maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Glacier girls wrestling coach Chris Leck praised her character and dedication, stating, “She is a quiet leader; she is a great student.”

Community Involvement and Future Aspirations

Sphuler’s commitment extends beyond academics and athletics. She has accumulated over 600 hours of community service and is projected to finish her high school career with over 90 wins. Her achievements highlight the growing opportunities for female athletes in Montana and her dedication to making a positive impact both on and off the wrestling mat.
