A direct correlation has been established between the relative number of fallen in relation to the population of a given region of Russia and the standard of living in that region.

The poorer the region, the more likely its people are to die in war.

For example, residents of Aizbaikal region have a 15 times higher chance of ending up in Ukraine than Muscovites.

The highest relative number of fallen is in Tuva and Chukotka Autonomous Region, where it reaches 0.5% of the total population, while in Buryatia it is 0.4%.

At the same time, the number of people who fell in Moscow from the total population of the capital reaches only 0.02%.

Exceptions to this trend are Ingushetia, Chechnya and Karachay-Cherkessia. Although they are one of the poorest regions of Russia, the number of victims of war there is comparable to the level of Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Currently, 33% of the fallen are volunteers. Meanwhile, the number of criminals recruited in prisons among the fallen, which reached 19% a year ago, decreased to 12%.

This is explained by the fact that now many of those who have committed crimes are sent to the front even before trial.

On the other hand, 11% of the fallen are the mobilized.

Since the start of Russia’s re-invasion, journalists from “Mediazona” and the BBC Russian newsroom, with the help of a team of volunteers, have been keeping track of Russian soldiers who died in Ukraine, using open sources such as obituaries on government and media websites or social media sites, as well as photographs of burials.

This count does not take into account the losses of the military formations of the so-called Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.
