Durango Volunteers Paint Crosswalks to Boost Neighborhood Safety

Durango’s Multimodal Division has rolled out a hands-on community volunteer initiative aimed at improving the safety, accessibility, and enjoyment of Durango’s multimodal infrastructure, partnering with neighborhood residents and advocacy groups to install fresh street markings. On Oct. 4, 2026, community members alongside the local Strong Towns chapter and Bike Durango will paint two crosswalks crossing East 5th Avenue at 5th Street, [durangoco.gov] reported.

The upcoming project follows a similar installation on Aug. 11, 2026, when volunteers painted a crosswalk at Veterans Way and 12th Street, connecting the Animas River Trail to the Camino Del Rio Hawk Crossing. City staff supply all the necessary equipment for the installations, and participants must be at least 13 years old to take part.

Multimodal Coordinator Highlights Community Connection Goals

The initiative is designed to give residents a direct role in improving the community while fostering neighborhood ties.

“We are excited to enable people to improve the community through volunteer projects. Right now, we are focusing on crosswalk installation but are excited to look at other opportunities,” Multimodal Coordinator Dylan Cuatt stated, as cited by [durangoco.gov]. “These events give our community a way to connect with their neighborhood and get to know other local organizations aimed to improve safety and connectivity.”

Durango Organizes Work Crews for Street Painting

The City of Durango organizes the work crews and manages safety gear distribution for each street painting event. Residents interested in joining the Oct. 4 project or learning about future infrastructure enhancements can call (970) 764-8998 or visit the official city portal, [durangoco.gov] noted. Public Information Officer Tom Sluis manages media inquiries for the department at (970) 375-5090 or via email at Tom Sluis, according to municipal records.
