Two South Africans Confirmed Dead Fighting in Ukraine for Russia

At least two South African citizens have died while fighting in Ukraine on the side of Russia, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, confirmed on Thursday, February 26, 2026. The deaths are linked to recruitment schemes that lured South Africans with false promises of employment or security training.

Details of the Deaths

Lamola stated that the identities of the two deceased men are being withheld as their remains are being repatriated to their families for burial . He clarified that these deaths are separate from the case of 17 South Africans who were allegedly recruited by individuals associated with the MK Party (MKP) . These two men were recruited through a different, unrelated scheme.

Government Response and Repatriation Efforts

The South African government has been actively working to secure the return of its citizens from the conflict zone. Lamola met with the families of the 11 South Africans who returned home on Wednesday, February 24, 2026, offering support and outlining the ongoing investigation into the recruitment practices . Two additional South Africans remain hospitalized in Russia due to medical reasons and are expected to return home within a few weeks once cleared for travel .

Investigation and Legal Consequences

Lamola emphasized that those involved in the recruitment schemes could face legal repercussions upon their return to South Africa. “As and when they arrive in South Africa, the law must seize its course. Everyone who is involved in this situation, this scheme, must be held accountable and there must be consequences,” he stated . Authorities are investigating the networks responsible for exploiting vulnerable job seekers.

Warning to South African Citizens

The Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation is urging South Africans to exercise extreme caution when considering job offers abroad, particularly those involving security, logistics, or technical support in high-risk regions. Lamola cautioned, “If a job offer abroad sounds too good to be true, it probably is” . Citizens are advised to verify any foreign employment opportunities through South African diplomatic missions.

Broader Recruitment Concerns

Ukraine estimates that over 1,700 Africans have been recruited to fight for Russia . Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma, was previously investigated for alleged involvement in luring men to Russia, but she denied any wrongdoing and resigned from her position as a lawmaker .
