Russell Secures Pole Position at Australian Grand Prix as Antonelli Crashes in FP3

Melbourne, Australia – George Russell of Mercedes secured the pole position for the 2026 Australian Grand Prix after a dramatic FP3 session at Albert Park, which was interrupted by multiple red flags, including a significant crash by his Mercedes teammate, Kimi Antonelli.

FP3 Session Disrupted by Crashes

The FP3 session was delayed by 20 minutes due to barrier repairs following a crash in the preceding F3 race. The session was further disrupted by two red flags. The first was triggered by a stoppage for Williams driver Carlos Sainz at pit entry, continuing a troublesome weekend for the team. The second, and most significant, was caused by a heavy crash for Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli in Turn 2. Antonelli appeared to bottom out before losing control and impacting the outside wall.

Russell Leads Ferrari Duo in Qualifying

Despite the interruptions, Russell managed to set the fastest time, leading Ferrari drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Russell’s blistering lap came at the finish of the session, showcasing Mercedes’ improved pace. Hamilton had earlier led the running, but Russell ultimately surpassed him and Leclerc to claim the top spot.

Ferrari Shows Early Pace

Earlier in the week, Ferrari demonstrated strong performance in the initial practice sessions. Charles Leclerc topped FP1, with Lewis Hamilton close behind in second. This Ferrari 1-2 hinted at the potential for a competitive weekend for the Scuderia. In FP2, both Ferraris remained competitive, with Hamilton finishing fifth and Leclerc sixth.

Mercedes’ Recovery and Antonelli’s Incident

Mercedes had a more challenging start to the weekend, but showed improvement in FP2, and FP3. While Russell secured pole, Antonelli’s crash cast a shadow over the team’s progress. The incident is under investigation, and the extent of any damage to the car is yet to be determined.

Australian Grand Prix Qualifying Results

The qualifying session sets the stage for an exciting Australian Grand Prix. With Russell on pole, the race promises a battle between Mercedes and Ferrari. The full starting grid will be confirmed after qualifying.
