Indonesia Prepares for Massive Eid al-Fitr Travel Surge, Jakarta Offers Free Public Transport

Indonesia is bracing for a significant surge in travel during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr holiday, with projections estimating 143.9 million people will be on the move . The government is implementing mobility management strategies to mitigate congestion, while Jakarta is offering free public transportation to residents and visitors.

Travel Projections and Government Response

The anticipated 143.9 million travelers necessitate careful planning to avoid overcrowding during peak times. Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno outlined strategies including extending the holiday period, adjusting school vacations and implementing flexible working arrangements for civil servants to ease travel demand .

Beyond managing the flow of people, the government is prioritizing safety, particularly concerning potential hydrometeorological disasters. Areas in Sumatra, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, Bali, and Papua remain at high alert due to ongoing rainfall and flood risks . Jakarta’s Free Public Transport Initiative

Events such as the Jakarta Light Festival, Harmoni Ramadan Jakarta, and Jakarta Festive Wonder are also scheduled .
