Reform UK made sweeping gains in the 2026 local elections in England, capturing 1,454 total councillors and securing 14 councils, according to official results published by the BBC. The vote reshaped local government control across the nation, resulting in major losses for the Labour Party and the Conservative Party as politics fragmented significantly.

England Council Results and Party Breakdowns

Counting concluded across all 136 councils, revealing a sharp shift in voter support away from traditional parties. According to BBC election data, Reform UK gained 1,452 councillors to finish with a total of 1,454, alongside taking control of 14 councils.

The governing Labour Party suffered heavy setbacks, losing 1,498 councillors and 38 councils to finish with 1,068 councillors across 28 councils. The Conservative Party experienced similar losses, dropping 563 councillors and 6 councils to hold 801 councillors across 9 councils.

Other parties also registered notable movements in the 2026 local elections:

• Liberal Democrats: Secured 844 total councillors (a gain of 155) and control of 15 councils (a gain of 1).
• Green Party: Reached 587 total councillors (a gain of 441) and won 5 councils (a gain of 5).
• Independents and Others: Accounted for 213 councillors, reflecting a gain of 35 seats.
• No Overall Control: Councils without a single party holding a majority rose by 23 to reach a total of 64.

In the London borough of Croydon, Conservative Jason Perry retained his position. Meanwhile, the Green Party picked up mayoral victories in Hackney, where Zoë Garbett won the seat previously held by Labour’s Caroline Woodley, and in Lewisham, where Liam Shrivastava defeated former Labour incumbent Brenda Dacres.

Elsewhere, Labour held the mayoral contest in Newham through Forhad Hussain, succeeding Rokhsana Fiaz. The Aspire party retained leadership in Tower Hamlets under Lutfur Rahman, and the Liberal Democrats maintained control in Watford with Peter Taylor.
