2026 World Baseball Classic to Serve as Olympic Qualifier for LA28
The 2026 World Baseball Classic, scheduled for March 5-17 in Miami, will not only crown a world champion but too serve as a crucial qualifying tournament for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Two teams from the Americas, excluding the host United States which has an automatic berth, will secure their spots in the Olympic baseball tournament through their performance in the Classic.
Road to Los Angeles 2028
Baseball will return to the Olympic program at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles in 2028, marking its first appearance since the 2020 Summer Olympics. Baseball at the 2028 Summer Olympics was approved as one of five optional sports for the games. A total of six national teams will participate in the Olympic tournament.
Qualification Process
The qualification pathway for the six-team Olympic tournament is as follows:
- Host Nation: The United States automatically qualifies as the host country.
- World Baseball Classic (Americas): Two teams from the Americas will qualify through the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
- WBSC Premier12: Two teams will qualify through the 2027 WBSC Premier12, with one team from Asia and one from either Europe or Oceania.
- Final Qualifying Tournament: The final team will be determined through a Final Qualifying Tournament held no later than March 2028. This tournament will include teams from the Asian Baseball Championship, European Men’s Baseball Championship, Oceania Baseball Championship, and the Africa Cup Baseball Championship.
Star Power in the 2026 Classic
The 2026 World Baseball Classic boasts a roster of MLB stars. Defending champion Japan will feature Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who will focus solely on hitting as a designated hitter. Team USA has added Aaron Judge (New York Yankees) and Bryce Harper (Philadelphia Phillies) to their lineup. Notably, Clayton Kershaw, who recently retired, will conclude his professional career in the tournament.
Latin American teams also showcase significant talent. The Dominican Republic will feature Juan Soto (New York Mets), Manny Machado (San Diego Padres), Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (Toronto Blue Jays), and Julio Rodríguez (Seattle Mariners). Puerto Rico will be led by Nolan Arenado (Arizona Diamondbacks), while Venezuela will feature Salvador Perez (Kansas City Royals) and Ronald Acuña Jr. (Atlanta Braves). Mexico will rely on Randy Arozarena (Seattle Mariners), Alejandro Kirk, Ramon Urias, and Andres Munoz.
