Texas Defeats South Carolina in Women’s Tennis Match

AUSTIN, TEXAS – The No. 22 South Carolina women’s tennis team fell short against No. 9 Texas in Austin on Thursday afternoon. The Gamecocks’ record now stands at 9-5 overall and 2-4 in SEC play.

Doubles Play

No. 21 Lauren Friedman and Helena Buchwald continued their strong performance, securing a doubles victory over Salma Drugdova and Anastasia Abbagnato of Texas with a score of 6-3. Whereas, South Carolina dropped the match on court three, with Sara Borkop and Jane Dunyon falling 6-1 to Elizabeth Ionescu and Christasha McNeil. The doubles point came down to a battle on court five, where Kaitlyn Carnicella and Jana Stojanova fought back from a 4-4 tie but ultimately lost 6-4, giving Texas the doubles point.

Singles Play

The Gamecocks gained momentum in singles play, winning three first sets, including Buchwald’s 6-3 victory over her ranked opponent. Buchwald went on to defeat No. 16 Anastasia Abbagnato in straight sets (6-3, 6-4). Jana Stojanova also secured a straight-set win (7-5, 6-4) on court six. Taylor Goetz won her first set on court four, but her opponent forced a third set, which Texas ultimately won. Jane Dunyon fought back in the second set, winning 7-5 and forcing a third, but her match was left unfinished as Texas clinched the overall match victory.
