Event History and Course Route
What started as a modest gathering of 1,500 participants in 2002 has grown into one of the country’s most prominent 5K events. The course spans 3.5 miles, tracing the final steps of New York City firefighter Stephen Siller. Siller ran through the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel to reach the Twin Towers, where he ultimately lost his life. The run and walk officially kicks off at 9:30 a.m., beginning in Brooklyn and concluding in Manhattan.

Extensive street closures are in effect across Brooklyn and Manhattan along the 5K route. The New York City Police Department is managing closures at its discretion throughout the event. Affected roadways in Brooklyn include Beard Street, Visitation Place, Verona Street, Delevan Street, Commerce Street, Seabring Street, Bowne Street, Hamilton Avenue, Woodhull Street, Columbia Street, Dwight Street, Richards Street, and Van Brunt Street. In Manhattan, closures impact the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel Manhattan-bound entrance, West Thames Street, Liberty Street, Vesey Street, River Terrace, Murray Street, Warren Street, North End Avenue, South End Avenue, West Street, and the Battery Park Underpass.
