At the 28th edition of the Festival Internacional de Cine Medioambiental de Canarias (Ficmec), Japanese filmmaker Momoko Seto presented her animated feature Dandelion’s Odyssey, a film that explores ecological themes through a unique sensory lens. The movie, which premiered on June 7, 2026, at Parque del Drago in Icod de los Vinos, follows four seed characters—Dandelion, Baraban, Léonto, and Taraxa—as they journey through space after surviving a nuclear explosion that destroyed Earth. The film combines 3D animation with real-world macro photography and time-lapse techniques, creating an immersive environmental narrative.

The Creative Vision Behind “Dandelion’s Odyssey”

Seto emphasized that her film does not take a political stance on environmental issues but instead invites audiences to experience nature through a sensory perspective. “We wanted to show the world from the seeds’ viewpoint, using techniques like time-lapse and zoom to make them appear larger than life,” she explained. The animation focuses on the seeds, while the surrounding ecosystems—plants, animals, and landscapes—are captured in real footage. This juxtaposition allows viewers to engage with familiar natural elements in unfamiliar ways, fostering a deeper connection to the environment.

Competition and Festival Highlights

Dandelion’s Odyssey is part of the official competition in the fiction feature category at Ficmec 2026. The festival also featured other environmentally themed projects, including Jota Urondo, un cocinero impertinente, a documentary about Argentine chef Javier Urondo, who challenges industrial food norms by promoting traditional, local ingredients. The film screened on June 7, followed by a brunch tasting event at IES San Marcos, highlighting Canarian cuisine with dishes like kimchi, gochujang, and locally sourced meats.

Another focal point of the festival was ECOrueda, a program where filmmakers created short environmental documentaries in a compressed timeframe. These films were showcased alongside the XIV Feria Medioambiental, an event blending ecological production with sustainability education.
