Thirty-three electric vehicles are competing in the “Latvijas e-Auto” contest as a two-day deep-dive test drive event takes place near Igates Pils, uzladets.lv reported. This year’s lineup sets a record for participation, drawing entries across three distinct price brackets as the Latvian market experiences a sharp climb in zero-emission vehicle registrations.
Record Contenders Testing Near Igates Pils
The competition features 33 battery-electric vehicles evaluated by a panel of industry professionals, public figures, and automotive enthusiasts. Uzladets.lv reported that judges are testing suspensions, sound systems, driving assistants, and cabin screens across three valuation tiers: vehicles priced under 30,000 euros, models ranging from 30,000 to 60,000 euros, and luxury options exceeding 60,000 euros.
Lasi.lv detailed the specific vehicle distribution across these segments, noting that the budget class contains 10 models with base prices running from 21,990 to 33,810 euros. This entry-level group includes the BYD Dolphin, Cupra Raval, Ford Explorer EV, Kia EV2, MG 4 Urban, Nissan Micra, Omoda E5, Renault 4 E-Tech electric, Volkswagen ID.3 Neo, and Volkswagen ID. Polo. Within this tier, a notable design rivalry has emerged between Volkswagen Group siblings built on the MEB+ platform. While the Cupra Raval offers an emotional and sporty aesthetic, the Volkswagen ID. Polo maintains a traditional, solid German build quality.
The mid-range category spans 17 models with starting prices between 35,900 and 59,900 euros. Lasi.lv reported that this segment features six Chinese brand models alongside offerings from Tesla, Subaru, Toyota, and others. Standouts in this group include Zeekr and Xpeng for their high maximum charging capacities, and the Mercedes-Benz lineup for energy efficiency and driving range. Meanwhile, the luxury segment above 60,000 euros pits six models from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Lexus against one another, focusing heavily on acoustic comfort and cabin craftsmanship.

Commercial transport also makes an appearance in the mid-tier category with the Kia PV5 Cargo. Uzladets.lv noted that the utility vehicle challenges traditional metal-box assumptions by pairing modern styling with practical workspace design.
Market Growth Pressures State Support Funding
The evaluation drives unfold against a rapidly expanding commercial backdrop. Lasi.lv reported that during the first eight months of the year, Latvia registered 1,414 new electric vehicles, marking a 36 percent increase compared to the same period in the previous year. Chinese manufacturer brands account for a quarter of these registrations, up from 19.3 percent a year prior, with BYD climbing to second place behind Toyota and surpassing Volkswagen, Škoda, and BMW.

Despite this market momentum, financial backing for buyers is disappearing. Uzladets.lv reported that the state support program for electric vehicle acquisitions, known as EKII-10, is already depleted by more than 43 percent.
