37 Rainy Days: Is the Rain Ever Going to Stop?

Great Britain is currently experiencing exceptional weather conditions with persistent rainfall affecting large parts of the country. The Met Office is also forecasting no improvement in the situation for the coming week.

The southwest of England and the Midlands in particular are facing major challenges from rising water levels. Meteorologists are reporting an unprecedented series of rainy days, which is putting increasing strain on the infrastructure.

Hundreds of flood warnings issued across the country

The Environment Agency has already issued 85 specific flood warnings for England, with acute flooding expected. Additionally, over 245 flood warnings are in force, warning of potential dangers from North Yorkshire to Cornwall.

The situation is also tense in Wales and Scotland, as several warnings are also active there. The authorities are warning the population to be careful, as the ground in many places can no longer absorb water.

Dark records and a lack of sunshine

A look at the statistics illustrates the extent of the capricious weather this year. According to a report by The Guardian It rained in the UK for 37 consecutive days.

Cities like Aberdeen and Sheffield also suffer from an extreme lack of sunshine. No sun at all has been recorded in Sheffield since the start of February.

Sporting events and forecasts

The masses of water are already having an initial impact on public life and major sporting events. A planned horse race in Newcastle had to be canceled after the racecourse was completely submerged in water.

Dan Stroud from the Met Office told the press that unfortunately there is currently no end in sight to the wet weather. The southwest and south Wales regions have already recorded 50 percent more rainfall than usual in January.

The wettest February in history is looming

If the trend continues, this month could break the previous record set in 2020. At that time, storms Ciara and Dennis caused record rainfall of over 213 millimeters.

Torrential rain is again forecast for large parts of the country in the coming days from Monday to Wednesday. Short dry intervals will hardly be enough to sustainably ease the tense flood situation.
