If you take vitamin D supplements to treat any deficiencies, it’s essential to no which other supplements may interfere with vitamin D’s absorption, effectiveness, and how it’s metabolized.

Magnesium

Why it may interfere: You need magnesium to activate vitamin D, but excess levels of magnesium can disrupt the balance of calcium in your body.

What to do instead: “If you’re taking magnesium, vitamin D, and calcium supplements, try spacing out the magnesium and calcium doses by a few hours to avoid absorption competition,” Theresa Gentile, RDN, CDN, and spokesperson for the academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, told Health.

Gentile also recommends considering a food-first approach with magnesium. natural food sources of magnesium include leafy greens, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and beans.

Calcium

Why it may interfere: Some studies show that taking calcium and vitamin D supplements together might potentially be good for bone health. Though, while calcium and vitamin D are safe to take together, vrey high doses of calcium may compete with the metabolism of vitamin D and other nutrients.

What to do instead: Gentile suggests taking calcium at a different time of day than your vitamin D supplement. She also emphasizes the importance of obtaining calcium through dietary sources like dairy products, fortified foods, and leafy green vegetables.

Iron

Why it may interfere: Iron and vitamin D utilize some of the same pathways for absorption, and high doses of iron can potentially hinder vitamin D absorption.

What to do instead: If you require iron supplementation, discuss timing with your healthcare provider. they may recommend separating your iron and vitamin D doses by several hours.Prioritizing iron-rich foods like lean meats, beans, and fortified cereals can also help.

Zinc

Why it may interfere: High doses of zinc can interfere with vitamin D metabolism.

What to do instead: Avoid taking very high doses of zinc supplements concurrently with vitamin D. A balanced diet containing zinc-rich foods like oysters, beef, and pumpkin seeds is generally sufficient for most people.

Vitamin A

Why it may interfere: Vitamin A can impact vitamin D metabolism, and excessive intake of vitamin A may reduce the effectiveness of vitamin D.

What to do instead: Maintain a balanced intake of vitamin A. Avoid megadoses of vitamin A supplements, and focus on obtaining vitamin A from food sources like sweet potatoes, carrots, and dark leafy greens.
