lamezia Terme, Calabria, has officially opened its new state-of-the-art sports hall, marking a meaningful investment in the region’s sporting infrastructure. The inauguration coincides with the hosting of the Final Four of the Italian five-a-side football (futsal) Cup, taking place today and tomorrow.
A Landmark Facility for Southern Italy
The new arena is poised to become one of the largest sporting venues in Southern Italy, boasting a capacity of 3,500 spectators for standard events. Its adaptable design allows for expansion to nearly 5,000 seats, making it suitable for large-scale conferences and concerts.
Innovative Design and Construction
The sports hall’s distinctive architecture features a metal lattice structure constructed with thin elements and a triple translucent external membrane.This membrane is comprised of 900 pressurized ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) balloons,a material known for its durability,lightweight properties,and energy efficiency. The design not only provides optimal seismic resistance but also creates a dynamic visual effect,changing with the light throughout the day and night while effectively managing light and heat transmission for athletic performance.
Energy Efficiency and Sustainability
The innovative use of constant pressure cushion technology minimizes heat gain in the summer and heat loss in the winter, contributing to the building’s energy efficiency. Furthermore, the roof’s shape is designed to harness prevailing winds, promoting natural ventilation throughout the facility.
Internal Features and amenities
The ground level of the hall houses comprehensive facilities to support sporting events. These include a removable wooden parquet playing field, four changing rooms for athletes and referees, a dedicated staff changing room, two first aid stations, an anti-doping control room, and ample storage for sports equipment. Additional amenities include a spacious entrance hall, restrooms, and a bar area. Technical rooms are located at the rear of the facility.
Strategic Location and Regional Impact
Administrators and professionals involved in the project emphasize that the new sports hall is intended to serve as a regional hub, attracting visitors and events to Calabria and Southern Italy. Its strategic location along the State Road 280 dei Due Mari, near the railway station, airport, and Salerno-Reggio Calabria motorway, ensures excellent connectivity to major regional centers and a broad catchment area.
