## Tai Chi for sleep?
A study published in the BMJ, found that Tai Chi may improve sleep as effectively as the top insomnia therapy. Hong Kong University exercise physiologist Parco M.Siu and colleagues compared the first-line treatment for the sleep disorder, cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) with regular sessions of Tai Chi.
They recruited 200 ethnic-Chinese adults above 50 who lived in Hong Kong and had been diagnosed with chronic insomnia. 31 out of the 85 tai chi participants enjoyed improvements in sleep quality and duration, quality of life, mental health and physical activity level.
Here are five gentle Tai Chi moves you can try at home and enjoy a good night’s restful sleep that has you waking up with a smile.

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Now slowly shift your weight from one leg to another while floating your arms from one side to another. This move supports rhythmic breathing and gently releases the tension in the shoulders and spine.
Wild Horse’s Mane
Step one foot forward, bend your knees slightly and hold your arms in front of your chest like you are holding a ball. Then extend one hand forward and the other backwards while switching sides alternately. The motion opens up the chest and shoulders balancing the breath and movement.

Quantum Computing: A Revolution in Processing Power
Quantum computing represents a paradigm shift in computation, moving beyond the classical bits that underpin today’s digital world. Rather of representing data as 0s or 1s, quantum computers leverage the principles of quantum mechanics – superposition and entanglement – to perform calculations far beyond the capabilities of even the most powerful supercomputers. This technology promises breakthroughs in fields like medicine, materials science, finance, and artificial intelligence, but also presents important challenges in its development and implementation.
The Fundamentals of Quantum Computing
To understand quantum computing, it’s crucial to grasp the core concepts that differentiate it from classical computing:
- Qubits: Unlike classical bits, which are either 0 or 1, qubits can exist in a superposition of both states simultaneously. This is akin to a coin spinning in the air – it’s neither heads nor tails until it lands. Mathematically, a qubit is represented as a combination of 0 and 1, allowing it to explore multiple possibilities concurrently.
- Superposition: This allows quantum computers to explore many potential solutions to a problem at the same time, dramatically increasing processing speed for certain types of calculations.
- entanglement: When two or more qubits become entangled, their fates are intertwined. Measuring the state of one instantly reveals the state of the others, regardless of the distance separating them. This interconnectedness is a powerful resource for quantum algorithms.
- Quantum Gates: Similar to logic gates in classical computers (AND, OR, NOT), quantum gates manipulate the state of qubits to perform computations. Though, quantum gates operate on superpositions and entangled states, enabling fundamentally different operations.
How is this different from a regular computer?
Classical computers perform calculations sequentially, one step at a time. Imagine searching a maze – a classical computer would try each path one after another. A quantum computer, thanks to superposition, can explore all paths simultaneously, potentially finding the solution much faster. However, it’s important to note that quantum computers aren’t meant to replace classical computers entirely. They excel at specific types of problems, while classical computers remain more efficient for everyday tasks.
Applications of Quantum Computing
The potential applications of quantum computing are vast and transformative:
- Drug Revelation and Materials Science: simulating molecular interactions with unprecedented accuracy can accelerate the discovery of new drugs and materials with specific properties. IBM is actively researching this request.
- Financial Modeling: Optimizing investment portfolios, detecting fraud, and assessing risk are areas where quantum algorithms can provide a significant advantage.
- Cryptography: Quantum computers pose a threat to current encryption methods. However, they also enable the development of quantum-resistant cryptography, ensuring secure dialog in the future.NIST is leading the effort to standardize these new algorithms.
- Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning: Quantum machine learning algorithms can potentially improve the speed and accuracy of machine learning models, leading to breakthroughs in areas like image recognition and natural language processing.
- Optimization Problems: Quantum computers are well-suited for solving complex optimization problems, such as logistics, supply chain management, and scheduling.
Challenges and Current Status
Despite its promise, quantum computing faces significant hurdles:
- Decoherence: Qubits are extremely sensitive to their surroundings. Any disturbance can cause them to lose their quantum properties (decoherence), leading to errors in calculations. Maintaining qubit stability is a major engineering challenge.
- Scalability: Building quantum computers with a large number of qubits is arduous. Current quantum computers have a limited number of qubits, restricting the complexity of problems they can solve.
- Error Correction: Quantum error correction is essential to mitigate the effects of decoherence and other errors. Developing effective error correction codes is a complex task.
- Programming Complexity: Quantum algorithms are fundamentally different from classical algorithms, requiring specialized programming languages and techniques.
Currently, several companies and research institutions are actively developing quantum computers, including IBM, Google, Rigetti, and IonQ.These machines are still in their early stages of development, but progress is being made rapidly. Cloud-based access to quantum computers is becoming increasingly available, allowing researchers and developers to experiment with this technology.
