South Korea Expands ‘Healthy Food Corner’ Project to Convenience Stores Nationwide

South Korea is bolstering its efforts to promote healthier eating habits among children and teenagers by expanding its “Healthy Food Corner” initiative to convenience stores across the country. The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) first launched the project in 2022, initially focusing on stores near schools, and is now significantly broadening its reach.

Addressing Concerns About Dietary Habits

The expansion comes as the MFDS recognizes the increasing number of children and adolescents purchasing food directly from convenience stores. Minister of Food and Drug Safety Oh Yoo-kyung highlighted concerns about rising sugar and sodium intake among this demographic Food Navigator. The initiative aims to create an environment where healthier choices are readily available and easily identifiable.

What are ‘Healthy Food Corners’?

‘Healthy Food Stores’ are designated areas within convenience stores that specifically showcase foods beneficial for a healthy diet. These corners feature items such as fruits and vegetables, high-protein options, products with reduced sugar and sodium content, and quality-certified children’s food products Food Navigator.

Implementation and Identification

Participating stores will display a ‘Sturdy Food Store’ sign externally. Inside, products within the healthy food corner will be clearly marked with green reveal cards and informational signage to enhance visibility for consumers Food Navigator. The MFDS is collaborating with local governments and major convenience store chains – including GS25, CU, 7-Eleven, and e-Mart 24 – to implement the project.

Pilot Project and Expansion Goals

A pilot project, initiated in March 2026 and scheduled to run through February 2027, began with 121 stores. The MFDS plans to expand the initiative to over 300 stores nationwide by the end of the year Food Navigator. The ministry also intends to strengthen consumer engagement through initiatives like the ‘Healthy Food Purchase Certification Event.’

Positive Early Results

According to the MFDS, convenience stores featuring healthy food corners have already demonstrated a 30% increase in sales of drinks with lower sugar content compared to stores without such corners Food Navigator. This suggests the initiative is effectively influencing consumer choices and promoting healthier options.

Looking Ahead

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, led by Minister Oh Yoo-kyung MFDS, remains committed to creating a food safety environment that encourages healthier eating habits in daily life. The expansion of the ‘Healthy Food Corner’ project represents a significant step towards achieving this goal.
