Deputy Shoots Man Accused of Shoplifting at Orlando Walmart

Orlando, FL – An Orange County deputy shot a man suspected of shoplifting at a Walmart on East Colonial Drive Sunday night, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO). The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. At the Walmart located at 11250 E. Colonial Drive.

Deputies responded to the store after receiving reports of a man attempting to steal merchandise. Upon arrival, the deputy located the suspect, wearing a mask, on East Colonial Drive, just west of Lake Berge Road, with a shopping cart filled with stolen items.

OCSO stated that the deputy attempted to communicate with the suspect and then discharged a Taser, which proved ineffective. The deputy then issued a verbal command, stating “Don’t reach,” before discharging his firearm. The suspect was struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Two knives were recovered at the scene, according to the OCSO report.

This incident marks the second time this week a shoplifter has been shot at a Walmart in Central Florida, WFTV reports.

The OCSO is investigating the shooting. Parts of East Colonial Drive were temporarily shut down, and drivers were advised to identify alternate routes. The sheriff’s office is expected to provide an update Monday morning.
