Three-Year-Old Boy Dies Days After Decatur House Fire

Springfield, IL – A three-year-old boy from Decatur, Illinois, died at HSHS St. John’s Hospital on February 20, 2026, following a house fire that occurred on February 17, 2026. The child, who has not been publicly identified, succumbed to injuries believed to be from smoke inhalation, according to Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon.

Details of the Incident

The fire broke out at a home in the 1500 block of East Vanderhoof Street in Decatur around 8:30 a.m. On February 17th. The toddler was initially transported to Decatur Memorial Hospital before being transferred to the Pediatric ICU at St. John’s Children’s Hospital in Springfield. Allmon’s office is awaiting the results of toxicology reports to determine the exact cause of death. State Journal-Register

Second Victim Injured

A 73-year-old man was also rescued from the burning home by Decatur Firefighters. He sustained severe trauma and burns and was flown to a medical facility in Rockford for treatment. His current condition is unknown.
