The Petersburg PORTA football team secured an 18-16 victory over Stanford Olympia on Friday, August 28, in a Sangamo Conference matchup, according to reporting by the Springfield State Journal-Register. Senior quarterback Lane McAnally supplied the game-winning 15-yard touchdown run with under five minutes remaining, while senior Drew Carter sealed the win with an interception in the end zone as time expired.
Late-Game Heroics and Defensive Stops
Trailing in the fourth quarter, PORTA orchestrated a decisive offensive drive that culminated in McAnally’s 15-yard scoring run with 4 minutes and 23 seconds left on the clock. According to McAnally, he rolled out of the pocket and took an open lane to the pylon rather than throwing into coverage.
Stanford Olympia (1-1) threatened late in the game after a blocked punt resuscitated the Spartans’ offense with 16 seconds remaining, according to regional coverage. However, the PORTA defense registered four takeaways overall, anchored by Carter’s game-clinching interception in the end zone with one second left on the clock.
“Our defense, it’s a big part of who we are,” McAnally said, as reported by the State Journal-Register. “Both defenses played great. Olympia is a great team and we just played great defense.”
Offensive Contributions and First-Half Momentum
PORTA’s offense leaned heavily on the connection between McAnally and wide receiver Bryce Davis. McAnally completed 11 of 15 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns. Davis hauled in five receptions for 113 yards and two scores, including a 19-yard touchdown catch with 32 seconds left in the first half and another score early in the third quarter that put the Bluejays ahead 12-8.
Carter also contributed heavily to the aerial attack, recording five catches for 100 yards, featuring a contested catch on a deflected pass during a third-and-long situation deep in PORTA territory.
“The concentration was nuts,” McAnally said of Carter’s performance. “I just trust them. I can throw it up and they can go get it.”
Olympia’s Missed Opportunities and Defensive Pressure
Ranked No. 8 in Class 3A by Illinois Media, Stanford Olympia struggled with missed opportunities, including two fumbles lost on handoffs. Senior running back Jimmy Lollar paced the Spartans with 72 rushing yards on 15 carries, while junior Ty Olson added 69 yards on 14 rushes.
PORTA sophomore linebacker Wesley Sampson disrupted Olympia’s second drive with three consecutive tackles for loss, finishing the contest with four tackles for loss. PORTA head coach Lonnie McAnally credited the defensive adjustments for halting Olympia’s momentum.
“Our defense was the savior tonight,” Lonnie McAnally said. “They just came alive. It’s really a new defense for us and a new defensive coordinator and our guys just really answered the bell tonight, no doubt about it.”
