Dozens of Cattle Killed and Loose After Kansas City Truck Crash

A tractor-trailer overturned on a downtown Kansas City, Missouri, highway curve on Oct. 18, 2026, spilling dozens of animals onto city streets and leaving dozens of cattle dead, according to authorities. The accident, which involved the truck and a passenger vehicle, occurred shortly before 3 a.m. local time on the westbound curve of Interstate 70 that passes over southbound Interstate 35 in downtown Kansas City, Kansas City Police said.

The truck’s manifest indicated that it was hauling 120 cattle at the time of the crash. Kansas City Police stated that 45 to 60 of the animals were killed in the incident. Both drivers involved in the collision were transported to area hospitals for evaluation and were reported to be in stable condition by the Kansas City Fire Department.

Search and Recovery Operations Across City Limits

Following the early morning rollover, surviving cattle roamed extensively across the urban area. Kansas City Fire Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins informed KMBC that escaped animals were spotted as far west as Kansas City, Kansas, and as far south as the Crown Center, located approximately three miles away from the initial crash site.

City authorities deployed drones to track the wandering livestock, while workers on horseback were brought in to corral the animals.

Current Status of the Livestock

Kansas City Police confirmed in a statement that all cows have now been accounted for following the multi-agency response, though authorities have not yet detailed the full extent of property damage or the specific cause of the initial collision between the truck and the passenger vehicle.
