The drama Looking into the Sun by Berlin director Mascha Schilinski is on the oscar shortlist in the International Feature Film category.That divided the Los Angeles Film Academy, with a total of 86 countries applying to compete in this category in 2026.
In August, German Films, the foreign portrayal of German films, nominated Looking into the Sun for the 98th Academy Awards next March.the drama tells the stories of four young women who live on a farm in the Altmark at different times, addressing themes of domestic violence, repressed longings, and inherited trauma.
Along with the German film, titles such as No Other Choice from South Korea, The Voice of Hind Rajab from Tunisia, and Belén from Argentina made the shortlist. France is represented by A Simple Accident by Iranian director Jafar Panahi, Norway with the family drama Sentimental Value, Spain with the road movie Sirât, and Brazil with the thriller The Secret Agent.
switzerland is on the shortlist with the drama Heroine and leading actress Leonie Benesch. Of the 15 candidates, five films will be nominated for the final round on January 22nd. The 98th Academy Awards will take place on March 15, 2026.
Shortlists of the other eleven categories
Last December, Germany’s political thriller the Seeds of the Sacred Fig Tree by Iranian Mohammad Rasoulof made it onto the shortlist and ultimately into the Oscar final. However, the trophy for best international film ultimately went to Brazil.
