“A virus replicates by hijacking the host cell’s machinery, commandeering normal processes to create copies of itself,” explained John Melchior, a biochemist and corresponding author of a study published in the journal of Proteome Research. “We wont to identify and then reinforce the molecular complexes that are vulnerable to many invading viruses, preventing them from taking control of the cell.”
“Instead of attacking the virus directly, we’re manipulating checkpoints within the cell to fight the infection,” Melchior clarified.
Virologist Amy Sims, a co-author of the study, highlighted the potential of this approach to combat various coronaviruses, ranging from those causing mild illnesses like the common cold to those responsible for severe conditions like COVID-19 and ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome).
