New compound Shows Promise in Alzheimer’s Treatment
A new chemical compound is offering hope for treating Alzheimer’s disease. Tests in a rat model showed remarkable results, and the biochemists behind the discovery are eager to start human trials.
alzheimer’s disease is often marked by the buildup of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain. It’s still debated whether these plaques cause the disease’s symptoms or are simply a result of them, but they remain a key area of research for potential treatments.
With current alzheimer’s treatments only managing symptoms, there’s a strong push to find drugs that address the disease at its source.

This new compound works by removing excess copper from the harmful beta-amyloid plaques in the brain.
“Around ten years ago,studies started showing how copper ions influence the clumping of beta-amyloid plaques,” explains biochemist Giselle Cerchiaro from federal University of the ABC (UFABC) in Brazil.
“researchers discovered that genetic changes and issues with enzymes that handle copper transport could lead to a buildup of the element in the brain,making those plaques worse. That’s why regulating copper levels has become a focus for Alzheimer’s treatment.”
It’s important to note that copper buildup isn’t universal in alzheimer’s patients – some actually have a copper deficiency.But for those with excess copper, scientists have long suspected a link to the disease’s progression.
