Gas Undertakings Act 1929

The Gas Undertakings Act 1929 (19 & 20 Geo. 5 c. 24) is an Act of the parliament of the United Kingdom that changed the laws regarding gas companies – those who made and supplied coal gas.

The british gas industry started in the 1810s, selling gas for lighting.^[[1] A lot of the rules for the industry were made in the mid-1800s. By 1929, only about 10% of gas was used for lighting; two-thirds was used for heating, and a quarter for industry. The existing laws were around 60 years old and didn’t fit the modern gas industry anymore.^[[1] Groups like the National Gas Council and the National Fuel and Power Council had been asking for these laws to be updated.^[[1] The Gas Undertakings Act 1929 aimed to fix these problems.
