CheckMate 9DW Trial Demonstrates Promising Outcomes in Advanced Hepatocellular Carcinoma
Recent findings from the CheckMate 9DW trial,led by Thomas Yau and colleagues,reveal important efficacy of the combination therapy nivolumab plus ipilimumab in treating advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The trial reported an overall response rate of 36%, a median progression-free survival (PFS) of 9.1 months, and a median overall survival (OS) of 23.7 months. These results position the combination as a potentially superior treatment option when compared to other regimens currently available.
A key factor contributing to the favorable outcomes observed in CheckMate 9DW was the study’s inclusion criteria. Unlike the IMbrave150 trial, CheckMate 9DW excluded patients with main portal vein invasion (Vp4), a characteristic associated with more aggressive disease. Furthermore, the patient cohort enrolled in CheckMate 9DW demonstrated comparatively more favorable disease biology, with a higher proportion of patients having earlier-stage HCC – Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage A/B disease (27%) – compared to IMbrave150, where 82% of patients had BCLC stage C disease. These distinctions in patient populations likely influenced the observed differences in treatment response and survival outcomes.
