The Abandoned Buzludzha Monument: Bulgaria’s “soviet UFO”
Monuments are built to remember notable events. But sadly, not all of them get the care they deserve and end up neglected.
one such monument is Buzludzha, a stunning circular building that, at first glance, looks like a UFO. It’s located in the Balkan Mountains, near the city of Kazanlak, Bulgaria.
According to Domus, the Buzludzha Monument was created as a symbol of the Bulgarian communist Party‘s victory. Party leaders wanted a monument on the mountaintops to celebrate the communist party’s past glory.

They finally chose a spot in the Balkan Mountains, about 1,441 meters (4,728 feet) above sea level, to build the Buzludzha Monument. The monument’s design came from Georgi V. Stoilov, a leading Bulgarian architect at the time.
Stoilov used a brutalist architectural style, mixing futuristic shapes with symbols of communist ideology. The main building is shaped like a large sphere, resembling a giant crown, but it often looks like a UFO – that’s why people call it the “Soviet UFO.”
The Buzludzha Monument was intentionally designed to be eye-catching from afar. Its mountaintop location makes it visible from all directions.

The monument was completed in 1981, but after the fall of communism in Bulgaria in 1989, it was abandoned. It fell into disrepair, and today it’s a shadow of its former self. The building is now considered a ruin, and it’s dangerous to enter.
Despite its condition, Buzludzha remains a fascinating and iconic landmark. It’s a reminder of a bygone era and a striking example of brutalist architecture. Many photographers and urban explorers are drawn to its unique and haunting beauty.
There have been discussions about restoring the monument, but it’s a complex and expensive undertaking. For now,Buzludzha stands as a silent witness to history,a “Soviet UFO” slowly fading into the Bulgarian landscape.
