Growing Investment in India’s AI Market
This initiative builds upon Google’s existing investments in India, including a planned $15 billion investment over five years to establish an AI data center in Andhra Pradesh, announced in October 2023 Google AI Data Center Investment. The AI Futures Fund, launched six months prior to the partnership proclamation, has already funded over 30 companies globally, including Indian webtoon startup Toonsutra and U.S.-based legal-tech firm Harvey Google AI Futures Fund. Google has also partnered with Reliance Jio to provide free access to its Gemini AI model to 505 million users Google Gemini and Jio Partnership.
Why India?
Several factors are driving increased investment in India’s AI sector. India boasts the world’s largest population and a rapidly growing internet user base – nearly a billion people have access to the internet. This provides a massive potential market for AI-powered applications. Furthermore, India is recognized as a hub for technological innovation and a source of skilled engineering talent.
“we firmly believe that the founders in India are going to be playing a leading role in defining that next era of global technology,” stated Jonathan Silber, co-founder and director of Google’s AI Futures Fund. “We think that it’s critical to invest in the early stage, particularly in key markets like India,so that we can be at the forefront of investing in the next generation of AI leaders.”
Market Projections and Global AI Spend
The Indian AI market is projected to reach $17 billion by 2027, according to a report by IT industry body Nasscom and consulting firm BCG NASSCOM AI Report. This growth is part of a larger global trend. Gartner forecasts global AI spending to reach nearly $1.5 trillion in 2025 and exceed $2 trillion in 2026 Gartner AI Spending Forecast.
