Simon Cowell recently discussed Liam Payne’s struggles following the disbandment of one Direction, offering insights into their conversation about Payne’s son, Bear, and the importance of finding fulfillment beyond music. Cowell shared his thoughts on the Rolling Stone Music Now podcast (listen here, Payne discussion begins at the 40-minute mark).

Cowell recalled advising Payne to prioritize happiness and not let music consume his life. “I remember saying, ‘Music is not everything, by the way. You’re in a position where you can decide when you want to put something out and when you don’t want to put something out.But don’t let it run your life anymore. Find something else that you’re passionate about that will bring you happiness.'”

Cowell also expressed his own uncertainty about whether he could have done more to prepare Payne for life after the band. He formed One direction in 2010, bringing together Payne, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik after Payne’s earlier solo attempt on The X Factor UK proved unsuccessful.

“You ask yourself that question: ‘Could I have done anything more? What would’ve happened to Liam if he hadn’t been in the band?’ I don’t know,” Cowell admitted. “All I know is having spoken…”
