Alonso Welcomes Newey’s Aston Martin Team Principal Role

Fernando Alonso has praised the news that Adrian Newey will become Aston Martin’s Team Principal in 2026, calling the move a “logical change.”

After almost 20 years with Red Bull, Newey joined the Aston Martin team as Managing Technical Partner in March. Many believe he can help the team reach the top, especially with the new regulations coming next season.

Aston Martin announced a leadership change before the Qatar Grand Prix. Newey will lead the team starting in 2026, while current Team Principal Andy Cowell will become Chief Strategy Officer. The team says this new role will better suit Cowell’s strengths.

Aston martin is currently eighth in the Teams’ Standings. Alonso is optimistic that Newey’s experience with accomplished teams will be valuable in his new position.

“It’s a logical change, you know,” Alonso said. “Adrian brings a lot of experience and a winning mentality. we need that at Aston Martin. He’s been at the top for so long, he knows what it takes to build a championship-winning team, and I think he can really help us get there.”

He added that he’s excited to work more closely with Newey. “We’ve already started collaborating, and it’s been great.I think we can achieve big things together.”

Cowell’s move to Chief Strategy officer will see him focus on the long-term planning and strategic direction of the team. Aston Martin believes his skills are best used in this area.

Newey’s appointment is a notable step for Aston Martin as they aim to become a consistent frontrunner in Formula 1. The team hopes his leadership will bring a new era of success.
