Robert Downey Jr. Hints at More Marvel Roles

At last July’s San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios announced that Robert Downey Jr. will play Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

By the time the first movie comes out next December, over seven years will have passed since the Oscar-winner last played Tony Stark. However, he’s strongly linked to that role, so it will be a challenge to move past being known as Iron Man. We expect a very diffrent performance as Victor Von Doom.

While Tony’s sacrifice likely won’t be reversed, the multiverse allows for the possibility of Downey returning as an Iron Man Variant. Marvel Studios might even want to bring him back for Iron Man 4 after Secret Wars.

The actor got people talking about the future today with a Thanksgiving Instagram post showing Iron Man and Doctor Doom sharing a wishbone. He might just be honoring his two comic book roles, but Downey knows this kind of post will get attention.

“For 17 years I’ve been connected to an iconic superhero, but it’s the message he represents that I’m thankful for,” he said in March. “Tony [Stark] helped me see how technology can improve the world, and that’s something I’ll remember forever.”
