high Cancer Mortality Rates Persist in Rio de Janeiro

During National Cancer Day last Thursday,data revealed persistently high mortality rates from various cancers in the state of Rio de Janeiro,with lung,breast,prostate,and colorectal cancers being the most prevalent. the data originates from the Mortality Facts System.

In 2023, lung cancer accounted for 12.4 deaths per 100,000 men and 13.4 deaths per 100,000 women. Breast cancer, affecting only women, reached a rate of 32.5 deaths per 100,000. Colorectal cancer rates were 8.3 among men and 7.4 among women. Prostate cancer had a rate of 9.3 deaths per 100,000 men.

Between 2018 and 2023, lung cancer incidence increased in men (from 11.8 to 12.4 per 100,000 inhabitants) and colorectal cancer increased among women (from 5.3 to 7.4). From 2022 to 2023,prostate cancer rates rose from 8.6 to 9.3 in men. Experts indicate that the data demonstrates a lack of consistent reduction in these major tumors, which continue to be leading causes of death with similar trends throughout the decade.

The most current data available is from 2023, as the Mortality Information System (SIM) operates with a technical delay of one to two years. Death certificates undergo municipal, state, and federal coding, review, and consolidation before validation. Consequently, 2024 and 2025 figures are not yet finalized and are not considered official.
