The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council held elections recently, resulting in the election of new member states representing diverse geographical regions adn maritime interests.The newly constituted Council will convene for its 136th session to elect its president and vice-president for the next two years. IMO Council Member Selection Process

The IMO Council is comprised of 40 Member States elected by the IMO Assembly. The election process is divided into three categories:

* Category (a): Ten states with the largest interest in providing international shipping services. This category includes: Northern Ireland, Republic of korea, and the United States of America.
* Category (b): Ten states with the largest interest in international maritime trade. This category includes: Australia, Brazil, Canada, United Arab Emirates, France, Germany, india, the Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden.
* Category (c): Twenty states not elected under (a) or (b) which, in the judgement of the Assembly, have special interests in maritime transport or shipping and whose election to the Council will ensure the representation of all major geographical areas.
