RCS: Like the “new SMS” Corporate communication redefined

Rich Communication Services (RCS) combines the universal reach of SMS with modern chat functions, without app installation. This opens up completely new possibilities for companies in customer communication.

But what does this mean technically and how can it be implemented in practice? Michael Graf, Product Owner attaktsoft Energy, explains the technology and its opportunities.

From relic to revival: Why RCS is taking off now

For a long time, SMS was considered a relic from the early days of mobile communications: inflexible, technically limited and hardly up-to-date. But with Rich Communication Services (RCS) it returns in a modern form and combines the universal access of classic SMS with the interactive possibilities of chat apps. What’s special: No additional app installation is necessary. This opens up a whole new playing field for companies that rely on direct, secure and accessible communication.

This advancement is no coincidence,as the current communications landscape brings with it important challenges.

The problem: Fragmented communication slows down companies

Emails end up in spam, WhatsApp is sensitive in terms of data protection, and various messengers fragment customer communication. This leads to a central problem, notably in regulated industries or with heterogeneous target groups: important information is simply lost or never reaches its recipients. The consequences are measurable: low opening rates, poor conversion rates and frustrated customers who have to switch back and forth between different channels. Simultaneously occurring, the administrative effort increases, as does the need to use different technical solutions when companies use multiple communication channels in parallel.

This is where RCS comes into play as a standardized, network-based solution that is supported on both Android and now iOS. It works via the native messaging app and therefore also reaches people who do not want or cannot install additional services. But what fundamentally distinguishes RCS from existing solutions?

Why RCS is more than a WhatsApp replacement

RCS is not another messenger, but a mobile communications standard based on the GSMA Universal Profile. This technical basis brings with it decisive advantages: messages travel via the mobile network, not via third-party platforms. If RCS fails or is not yet supported by the network operator, SMS automatically acts as a fallback. Company accounts must be verified with network operators – a plus point in terms of trust and security.Content can be designed interactively, for example with buttons, carousels or form functions.

This means that appointments, product comparisons or support requests can be displayed directly within the message, without any media disruption. The end-to-end encryption protects the data transfer, while the connection to regulated network structures ensures GDPR compliance.
