Babis to be Appointed Czech Prime Minister After Business Transfer
the winner of the Czech elections and leader of the populist party “Action of Disaffected Citizens” (ANO), Andrej Babis, will be appointed prime minister on December 9, according to the contry’s president, Petar Pavel, as reported by Reuters. This follows Babis’s proclamation earlier today that he would transfer his Agrofert business group to an independently managed trust fund.
Pavel had previously stated his willingness to appoint the 71-year-old election winner once he addressed the conflict of interest arising from his position as head of government and owner of a large business.
ANO, a member of the far-right Patriots for Europe group in the European Parliament, secured victory in the october parliamentary elections. The party has formed a government coalition with the far-right, anti-EU, and pro-Russian Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) party, and the Motorists for Self party, which campaigned against the EU’s carbon emission reduction policies.
