WASHINGTON – Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Friday she and President Trump had a “cordial” hour-long meeting in Washington, ending with both leaders inviting each other to visit thier respective countries.

“We’ll arrange a date later,” Sheinbaum told reporters outside the Mexican Cultural institute.

This meeting marked the first face-to-face encounter between the two, following months of disagreements between the United States and Mexico on issues like trade, immigration, and drug trafficking.

However, Friday’s meeting centered around soccer.

Sheinbaum attended the FIFA World Cup 2026 draw at the Kennedy Center, alongside Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The U.S., Mexico, and Canada are co-hosting the tournament, which begins in June.

in a social media post, Sheinbaum stated the three leaders discussed “the great chance that the 2026 FIFA World Cup represents for the three countries and the good relationships we have.”

“We agreed to continue working together on trade issues with our teams,” she added.

She later told reporters the meeting was “vrey positive,” emphasizing that she conveyed to Trump that Mexico is an “extraordinary” country. She personally invited him to mexico, and he invited her to return to Washington.

When asked if Trump made any specific requests, she said he did not.

After months of tension, this meeting coudl ease relations and pave the way for policy negotiations as both presidents address demands from their supporters.
