Habitat Minister: Logs Flooding Sumatra Not From Upstream Batang Toru

Jakarta – Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has shared initial findings regarding teh logs carried by flash floods in the Tapanuli area, North Sumatra. He stated the wood is a mix of naturally fallen trees and material that shouldn’t have been in the river.

“We can confirm the wood filling the river flow didn’t come from upstream Batang Toru.But, we’re continuing a detailed inspection,” Hanif said, according to Antara, Sunday (2025/12/07).

He added that authorities will investigate if anyone intentionally put the wood in the river, increasing flood risk. If intent is proven, there could be criminal charges.
